Build a Better World Summer Reading Program to Kickoff at DCPL

May 12, 2017

Young readers will discover new ideas, skills, and stories this summer as Dodge City Public Library presents the “Build a Better World” Summer Library Program.

Each year, many local students experience what is called “summer slide” and actually lose some of the achievement gains they made during the previous school year. One of the best ways to combat this problem is to read over the summer. The summer reading program at the Dodge City Public Library has thousands of books for kids to access during the summer while their school libraries are closed. In addition to the sheer number of books, the summer reading program offered by the library actually rewards students for reading. And let’s not underestimate the value of simply staying engaged throughout the summer. Participating in library activities is much healthier than sleeping in or looking at a television, tablet, or phone screen all day.

The fun begins May 31st at the library with a huge kick-off celebration to get the summer started and participants registered. A variety of exciting games and activities will be offered this day. Weekly programs will then follow throughout the summer. Scheduled weekly activities include magicians, group games, puppet shows, science and engineering experiments, and more. As always, programs at the library are free and open to all.

The 2017 Youth Summer Reading Program is open to young people, preschool through young adult, with programs, prizes, reading and more! Registration for “Build a Better World” begins on May 31st.  For more information, contact Youth Librarian, Rozanna Bennett, at 225-0248 or visit our website,
