On Tuesday, April 9, a group of second-level students from Dodge City Community College (DC3) participated in a simulation of a mass casualty scenario at the Floris Jean Hampton Nurse Education Center.
The surprise exercise simulation, designed to provide practical training to second-year nursing students on critical care practices, tasked the students with treating volunteers who were playing the parts of injured patients. These “patients” included current and former nursing students, as well as departmental faculty. The simulation was a valuable opportunity for the nursing students to apply their knowledge and skills in a critical care setting.
Jennifer Lix, Professor of Nursing, said, “I am just incredibly proud of these students. We created an unexpected, intense, and chaotic simulated experience for this group of students. Without hesitation, these future nurses rose to the occasion, took control of the situation, and provided exceptional nursing care to many simulated patients brought in for treatment.”
Personnel from Ford County Fire and EMS, Dodge City Police Department, and Ford County Emergency Management also were present on site to simulate a real-life scenario.
“Ford County Fire and EMS and DCPD have been incredibly supportive of our program,” Lix said. “We have had a longstanding relationship with these agencies, supporting our students in clinical experiences. We are very grateful for their continued support.”
