Automotive Technology The Automotive Technology program provides entry-level skills necessary to enter into and excel in the automotive service and repair industry. Automotive theories are built upon by extensive hands-on training in an active shop environment. The automotive industry has a high demand for qualified technicians who complete automotive training programs. Learners may build upon their education and experience to find employment in managerial and supervisory roles as well. Many technicians with advanced skills eventually find employment with manufacturers of new vehicles, their suppliers, or related businesses within the transportation industry.

Program Information About Program (Skills) Students completing the Automotive Technology program will gain the following:
Automotive diagnostic and troubleshooting skills using modern scan tools and equipment Proficiency in performing routine maintenance and vehicle service procedures Knowledge of engine systems, fuel systems, and internal combustion operation Ability to inspect, repair, and replace braking, suspension, and steering system components Skills in electrical and electronic system diagnostics and repair Knowledge of manual and automatic transmission, transaxle, and drivetrain operation, diagnosis, and repair Proficiency in HVAC system diagnostics, service, and environmental compliance procedures (including EPA-approved refrigerant handling) Ability to read, interpret, and apply OEM service information, wiring diagrams, TSBs, and electronic service manuals Safe and effective use of specialized shop tools, diagnostic equipment, lifts, and precision measuring instruments Understanding of workplace and vehicle safety practices aligned with OSHA, EPA, and industry regulations Strong customer service, documentation, and communication skills for professional interaction with service advisors and clients Awareness of current and emerging automotive technologies, including ADAS, hybrid/electric vehicle systems, and telematics Career Options Graduates of the Automotive Technology program may pursue the following careers:
Automotive Service Technician (Dealership or Independent Shop) General Maintenance and Light Repair Technician (Entry-Level) Line/Systems Technician – Engine, Electrical, Brakes, Steering & Suspension Service Consultant / Service Advisor Parts Specialist or Parts Department Associate Fleet Maintenance Technician (Municipal, Commercial, Rental, Transit) Shop Foreperson or Lead Technician (experience required) Automotive Diagnostics Specialist (advanced ASE certifications required) Electric/Hybrid Vehicle Technician (additional training and certification required) OEM or Aftermarket Field Service Technician (experience required) 2 years (68 credits) Associate of Applied Science
