How to support your student
- Help direct them to the appropriate channel and let them go from there. Try to avoid solving problems for them.
- Try not to panic when your student is upset or having a hard time (examples: miscommunication with a roommate, failed a test, shrunk their favorite clothing). Provide support and let your student vent. A bad day does not equal a bad experience.
- Along those same lines, it’s hard to know when to step in when your child is struggling. We offer counseling services on campus if needed, but if you notice a drastic change in your students personality or behavior, it may be time to intervene or seek professional help.
- Encourage your student to participate in extracurricular activities, especially the first few months. Meeting new friends is vital to a positive student experience.
- Care packages are always a great idea! Snacks, board games, school supplies, letters, and pictures are all great options to send your student.
- Expect change and discuss your expectations. Examples to discuss: communication timelines, finances/budget, visits, academics – to name a few. Keep in mind that your student is learning and growing and becoming an adult. Be patient and allow them to fail and pick themselves back up.
- Encourage your student to ask for help when needed, and encourage them to do it early in the semester! Professors have designated office hours and are willing to help, but they aren’t mind readers.
- Trust their judgment! The first year can be full of indecision, insecurities, and disappointments but also one of self-discovery and inspiration.
